“Fashion is best performing category while online sales surge.
UK retail sales posted a slight annual growth in November but the gains were slower than those achieved in October as the tough times on the high street continue, figures from the British Retail Consortium show.
Retail sales rose by 0.6% on an annual same-store basis in November, while total sales grew 2.3%. But the three-month average total growth was 2.4% compared to 2.7% for the 12-month period, indicating a slowdown recently. October had seen same-store sales rise 0.8% and total sales up 2.6%.
Fashion did well though, performing best in a tough month for retailers due to pent-up demand from the warm autumn, while online sales raced ahead 16% compared to November 2012.
“After a slow start, November growth picked up in a big way in the final week, when the one month countdown to Christmas coupled with falling temperatures saw many of us making a start on seasonal spending,” said Helen Dickinson, director general of the BRC.”
